We've heard some RVers use something called the 3/3/3 Rule: Travel no more than 3 hours to your next destination, arrive there by 3:00, and spend a minimum of 3 nights. Some also include something about 3 adult beverages being consumed once you've arrived as well, but I think that part is optional.
We thought the 3/3/3 Rule sounded like a good thing for us to follow, but we seem to break it constantly. Especially the 3-hour driving part. If Google Maps said it would take 2 1/2 hours to arrive, we always added a half-hour for us pokey folks and said "Yeah, we'll be there in 3 hours." The reality seems more like double that, though. Google Maps says 2 hours? More like 4 to 5 for us. Of course, this always includes a Walmart stop and a diesel fuel fill-up on the way. Everything just takes so much time. Miss a turn-off? It could be miles before we have an area to turn all 47 feet of us around and get back. Hills? Forgetaboutit. We're slowly learning that if we want to spend less than 3 hours on the road between campsites, we need to find one, oh, about 12 miles up the road from the last one. It's not a bad thing, it's just taking us a while to figure out just how slow we are and just how much we actually want to travel in a day. Our travel days seem to be turning out way longer than we anticipate, and although Weepy is comfortable to drive, it's still exhausting.
It really makes me think about those Travelers from my earlier blog post who drive almost every day so they can hurry up and see everything. No way for us! Hopefully we have enough years in us left to go slow and still see everything. Of course, you can argue that when you go slow, you're already closer to seeing everything.
